How the ranking is calculated
Each stock's return is its latest closing price against its closing price on Dec 31, 2025, the last trading day of 2025. Both prices are adjusted for stock splits, so a split never shows up as a gain or a loss. Dividends are not added back: this is the price return, and a stock that pays a large dividend has done better than its figure here.
Spin-offs are not added back either, so each stock's daily prices are searched for a single day that fell 45% or more or rose 300% or more. A day like that is almost always a spin-off or a ticker symbol that changed hands, and the stock is then listed below as not comparable instead of ranked.
The list covers the stocks in the S&P 500 today, so a company that joined the index this year is ranked on its whole year. Both share classes of a company that has two in the index, such as Alphabet's, are listed separately.
Not comparable this year: BNY (+1,263% on May 21, 2026). Each had a single day that no ordinary market session produces, the mark of a spin-off or of a ticker symbol that passed to a different security, so its figure for the year is not a market return and it is left out of the ranking and the counts.
Being checked (28): APP, APTV, BLDR, BSX, CHTR, CRWD, CSGP, CTVA, DDOG, FICO, FIS, FTNT, INTC, INTU, LITE, LULU, LVS, NKE, NTAP, PANW, PNR, PODD, PSX, ROL, STX, TTD, WDC, ZTS. A move this large for the year is shown once its daily prices have been checked for a broken day.
Not ranked (9): AVB, EA, ECHO, EQR, FDXF, HONA, MRSH, PSKY, WBD. A stock needs a closing price on both days to be ranked, and these did not have one, usually because they began trading this year or stopped trading. No figure is estimated for them.
